F.A.Q.

If your question isn’t answered here then please post your question at our Blog or at our Twitter site (http://www.twitter.com/ram_som_uk)

Q: Do I need my provisonal licence before driving and when can I start to drive ?

A: Yes. You must be in possession of your provisional licence prior to starting lessons. You can apply early for your licence to run from the date of your 17th birthday. Application forms are available from the Post Office.

Q: I passed my driving test in other country,
can I exchange it for a UK driving licence ?

A: This really depends on where you are from. There are plenty of countries from which you are allowed to swap your full licence for a UK one. Have a look at the foreign driving licence page for more detailed information on the DVLA site (click on the DVLA image on the other links page).

Q: What is the difference between a Trainee Driving Instructor
and Fully Qualified Driving Instructor ?

A: Trainee Instructors (PDI - Potential Driving Instructor) can be granted a temporary licence to teach while they finish the training for the test of their ability to instruct. This licence normally lasts 6 months. A fully qualified Driving Instructor (ADI - Approved Driving Instructor) has passed all the relevant tests. A PDI will have to display a pink certificate in the window while teaching, while an ADI has to show their green certificate. Without either of these, or one that has expired, a person can not legally take money for driving lessons. Below is an example of what they look like.

Q:  Can I learn to drive in my own car with a friend or family member ?

A:  Yes you can, however if you want to have a good chance of passing the driving test, I would advice to learn all of the skills with a driving instructor (ADI, PDI), and then practice in your own car. If you do it the other way round, you will learn some bad habits which an instructor will then have to train you out of.

Q: If I pass to drive a Manual car then can I drive an Automatic Car ?

A: Yes, if you pass a test for a manual car then you can drive an automatic car but if you pass the test for an automatic car then you can’t drive the manual car.

Q: Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can start my driving lessons ?

A: No. In fact it is a good idea to learn the theory whilst you are learning the practical as it can bring the subject alive making it easier to understand and remember.

Q: What material should I study to pass the Theory Test ?

A: Few Books to recommend:

1) The high way code
2) Knowing your traffic sign
3) The official driving test
4) Driving the essential skills

For Hazard perception :
1) Road sense hazard perception

Q: How long is the practical driving test ?

A: Approximately 40 minutes including the show me/tell me part.

Q: How soon can I drive my own car after passing the driving test ?

A: You don't need to wait the 2-3 weeks it takes for your full driving licence to arrive, you can start driving immediately. Your driving test pass certificate is not a licence, but the DVLA will be informed of your pass, so feel free to enjoy your new found freedom, but do drive safely.

Q: Do the examiners fail a certain number of pupils each month ?

A: No there are no limits to pass rates; basically as long as you are good enough there is no reason outside of your control why you would fail.

Q: Do you have to always carry your driving licence when driving a car in the UK ?

A: No. As long as you have a valid provisional or full driving licence, you don't need to always carry it. If you are stopped by the police, then you will be given 7 days to produce your licence. It is a good idea though to always have a means of Identity proof on you.

Q: How many points can i have on my licence ?

A: If you get more than 12 points on your driving licence including a provisional licence, you will get a driving ban!
